We had more to celebrate this week......Rhys's 6 weeks of medication were completed and he was able to get his central line removed! Thankfully this was an office procedure and he did great! Russ and I never realized how careful we were being in handling Rhys until we didn't need to be anymore....... It is so so so nice to be able to just reach down and cuddle your baby without being cautious. It was as if we all took a big sigh of relief and relaxed a bit more. I think Drew even picked up on this sense of calm, as he has been more interested in Rhys and more eager to hold him. I thought I would never get a picture of them together:)
Although I have never thought of Rhys as my patient, I thankfully am a NICU nurse and was quite comfortable taking care of his line and administering his medication twice every day. Some of that NICU nurse in me is hard to get rid of though....and part of the nurse that remains is the importance of the "first bath". In the NICU, when a baby loses their lines and is declared "well", the doctors break the good news to the parents and the nurses invite the family to give their baby a bath and to hold them without worries or cords for the first time. It is a real milestone and a very fun part of my job. Hence, I just could not wait to get Rhys really clean. The sponge baths since his birth just were not cutting it. So Friday night after his line was removed, he got his first real bath and we both loved it. I didn't need to be careful and I could get in all the little baby folds. It was great!
